Ted Lasso Season 4, Episode 2 "Curiouser and Curiouser" Review

Full spoilers ahead. This Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2 review picks up right where the premiere left off. The premiere had one job: get Ted back to Richmond. It did that job well, and it earned the ending it wanted. "Curiouser and Curiouser" has a harder job. It has to make Richmond feel different now that Ted's back in it, and it pulls that off almost immediately by refusing to just hand him his old life back.

Ted's Homecoming Isn't Quite Home

Ted wakes up in a rented room above The Crown and Anchor, Mae's pub, and the show wastes no time reminding you this isn't a rerun. Breakfast television is on. Shredded wheat comes in one giant brick instead of individual pieces, and Ted's confusion over it is a small joke doing a lot of work. Everything here is almost the same as he left it, and that "almost" is the whole point of the episode. He shows up to see Rebecca and skips Biscuits with the Boss for Kansas City barbecue instead. Small swap, same energy, and it tells you Ted's not trying to slot back into his old groove. He's building a new one on top of the old foundation. Hannah Waddingham and Jason Sudeikis still have that easy rhythm together, and the scene doesn't need to oversell the reunion because the actors just do it. Roy's running the men's team solo now, and the show doesn't dodge what that means for Ted walking back into the building. There's a walk through the old halls that plays as pure nostalgia for about ten seconds before the episode turns it into something more useful, forcing Ted to actually clock how much has changed instead of pretending he can pick up where he left off. Richmond still chants "Wanker" at him, so at least some things never change.

Meeting the Lady Greyhounds

The women's team storyline is where the episode does its real work, and it's the strongest choice Season 4 has made so far. Ted meets his players, including a keeper named Boots who plays without gloves because she wants to feel everything. It's the kind of specific, slightly unhinged detail this show has always been good at planting early and paying off later. There's a couple on the roster and a set of twin sisters, and clearly a full season of personal subplots being set up. The episode doesn't rush to cash any of them in yet. Good instinct. Let the team exist as people before the show starts mining them for drama.

Alice Chilton Is the Best New Character in Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2

Coach Alice Chilton is the episode's best new addition. She's been holding the team together without a head coach title to show for it, and she built Ted a scouting report before he even asked for one. She's furious, quietly and specifically, that Rebecca didn't even consider a woman for the job she's clearly qualified to do. She hands in her resignation. Ted doesn't accept it, and not because the show needs her around for convenience. He works for it, and the conversation actually earns the outcome instead of skipping to it.

Rebecca's Feminist Reckoning

That thread connects directly to the episode's sharpest scene, where Rebecca tells Keeley and Higgins that Alice basically called her a fake feminist for starting a women's team and then not hiring a woman to run it. Higgins pushes back, pointing out that's not exactly what Alice said, and Rebecca admits it was implied rather than stated. Keeley's response lands the hardest: of course Rebecca's a feminist, she just bankrolled an entire women's team and hired Ted "fucking" Lasso to run it. It's a genuinely good piece of writing because nobody in the scene is wrong. The show lets the tension sit instead of resolving it with a tidy bow, which is exactly the kind of institutional friction Season 3 sometimes flinched away from. Ted's press conference doubles down on that same idea from a different angle. Reporters ask him almost nothing about the women's team he was actually hired to coach, fixating on the men's side instead, while Roy holds his own presser across the building and calls out a journalist as "Paddington Bear" without breaking stride. It's a funny beat, but it's also the episode quietly pointing out that the institutional deck is stacked before Ted's players have even kicked a ball.

Beard Comes Home Too

The Beard subplot is the emotional backbone underneath all of it. He's stuck as Roy's assistant on the men's team and clearly torn about it, sneaking out for an awkward pint with Ted rather than just admitting what he wants. Roy sees it before Beard says a word, and lets him go, effectively firing his own assistant coach so his friend can go be happy somewhere else. It's a small, generous gesture from a character who used to communicate almost entirely in grunts, and it's a good sign for where Roy's arc might be headed this season. Beard runs to tell Ted the news, the two of them share a real moment, and Beard's wife Jane watches from the side with an expression that suggests their marriage might be the next thing this season decides to poke at. By the end of the hour, Richmond's women's team has its full coaching staff. Ted's in charge, Alice stayed, and Beard's back where he belongs. Nothing about the episode rushes to get there. It lets the politics of starting a women's team, the awkwardness of Ted stepping into a building that moved on without him, and the personal stuff simmering under Beard and Roy all breathe at their own pace.

Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2 Verdict

"Curiouser and Curiouser" isn't chasing the premiere's emotional highs, and it doesn't need to. It's doing the unglamorous work of building out a season, and it's doing it with the same specificity and character-first instincts that made the earlier seasons work. The women's team angle already feels like it has more to say than a straight rerun of the men's side ever could. Verdict: A confident follow-up that trades premiere-episode sentiment for real institutional friction, and it's better for it. Alice Chilton might be the season's best new character three episodes early.

Bottom line: Strong follow-up. Less flash than the premiere, more substance underneath it.
